Bio: Born in Santa Monica, Calif., on June 27, 1975, Tobey Maguire moved frequently with his mother along the West Coast as a boy, started acting at age 12 and almost immediately landed work in commercials. He soon appeared in the short-lived television series "Great Scott" (1992) and in smaller film roles such as This Boy's Life (1993). But his breakthrough performance came in director Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997).

Maguire's distinction as one of his generation's best actors was solidified with leading parts in Pleasantville (1998), The Cider House Rules (1999) and Wonder Boys (2000). Still, it was his performance as Peter Parker in Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004) that catapulted him to A-list status.

In 2003, Maguire took a break from playing a superhero to portray legendary jockey Red Pollard in Seabiscuit (opposite Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper).
